In an effort to curb the growth of energy use, California became the first state to pass major legislation specifying efficiency targets for electricity in new buildings. Nicknamed Title 24 after the California building code that launched the program, this legislation refers to a comprehensive energy policy developed for commercial and residential construction. It mandates that buildings must meet specific energy-saving standards before being approved for occupancy. The code extends to the electrical systems such as lighting and HVAC inside each building.
